Wild Roots Spring Homeschool Session is 12 weeks long. This session runs from February 26 - May 28, 2026.

  • Thursdays from 9am - 2pm
  • 12 Weeks of Social Studies/Nature Based Class for ages 3-13

Spring Social Studies/Nature Based Class Educational Plan:

Focus: As the land reawakens, children reflect on how people, places, and systems grow—and how we can care for them in return.

History:

  • Explore changes over time in the local landscape and biodiversity
  • Create class timelines of a plant’s growth or a season’s changes
  • Research Indiana’s environmental history and its impact on communities- highlighting Indigenous and Black agricultural history and its impact on spring growing practices
  • Investigate the civil rights movement and local changemakers in Indiana - create timelines of important events 

Civics & Government:

  • Study how elected leaders support gardens, green spaces, and environmental policies
  • Write letters or draw pictures to local officials about inclusion, fairness, and environmental protection
  • Participate in a civic action project like a clean-up or planting day

Geography:

  • Map garden beds, stormwater flow, or pollinator paths
  • Map local community areas of biodiversity vs. pollution and discuss environmental justice and its impact on the people of the community
  • Hike and journal about diverse spring habitats and microclimates - notice how various communities connect with the land
  • Explore how geography affects access to green space, clean water, and healthy food

Economics:

  • Investigate supply and demand through exchange of goods as a class community
  • Explore sustainability and fair trade in food systems around the world
  • Role-play a spring marketplace using goods students create or collect (e.g., wildflower bouquets, nature crafts) - practice concepts of equitable trade/fair trade and compare economic systems
  • Reflect on how economic systems reflect values—what happens when generosity leads?
