At Wild Roots, we believe children thrive when they are seen, trusted, and connected—to themselves, to others, and to the natural world. Our Montessori nature-based microschool serves children ages 3 to 13, offering a comprehensive, individualized education rooted in curiosity, care, and outdoor learning.

What Makes Wild Roots Unique:

  • Montessori-Aligned Learning: Hands-on, child-led academics based on proven Montessori principles
  • Nature as Classroom: Daily outdoor learning in diverse ecosystems fosters resilience, joy, and environmental stewardship
  • Mixed-Age Groups: Community-driven classrooms that support leadership, collaboration, and peer mentorship
  • Whole-Child Development: Social-emotional growth, executive functioning, creativity, and physical movement are central to our approach
  • Equity & Inclusion at the Center: We actively decolonize our curriculum and classroom practices, uplift diverse voices, and challenge systems of oppression in developmentally appropriate ways
  • Individualized Learning Plans: Children progress at their own pace with support from trained guides who observe, adapt, and nurture their growth

Academic Foundations:

  • Practical Life: Independence, coordination, and self-care
  • Sensorial: Observation, classification, and refinement of the senses
  • Math: Concrete to abstract learning using Montessori materials - number sense, operations, algebraic thinking, fact practice, geometry, fractions, data & measurement
  • Language: Concrete to abstract learning using Montessori materials - phonics, grammar, word study, reading, writing, research
  • Cultural Studies: Science- biology, physics, earth science, and astrology; social studies- history, geography, economics, and civics, cosmic education- understanding how all things are connected; cultural awareness - respect and appreciation for all while learning and appreciating cultures and beliefs around the world
  • STEAM Integration: art, music, theater, and engineering integration - following the design process to support the learner in respecting the process over the product

Nature Integration:

Our classrooms extend into forests, prairies, and wetlands. Nature integration includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Connect our cultural studies to the outdoors
  • Learn through the seasons
  • Engage in stewardship and sustainability
  • Observe life cycles, ecosystems, and natural phenomena
  • Build forts, journals, and confidence—outside

Who We Serve:

Children ages 3 to 13, grouped by developmental stages, not necessarily by age- children will receive the lessons and work they are ready for in each learning area. Our learning community is mixed age- all students will be together, supporting one another in their learning:

  • Early Childhood (3–6)
  • Lower Elementary (6–9)
  • Upper Elementary (9–12)
  • Middle School Bridge (12–13)

Our Microschool is ideal for families seeking full-time alternative education grounded in Montessori and nature.
